Both are forests full of life, but they feel, sound and even smell different. Here is how to decide, or how to combine them.

The core difference

A cloud forest grows at elevations where clouds and mist regularly touch the canopy. Moisture is captured directly from the air, which supports thick layers of moss, ferns, bromeliads and orchids. Lowland rainforest grows in warm, wet lowlands, with tall trees, buttress roots and a hot, humid understory. In Costa Rica, Monteverde is the classic cloud forest, while Sarapiquí, Tortuguero, La Fortuna’s foothills and the Osa Peninsula represent lowland and foothill rainforest.

Which should you choose?

If you can, do both: the contrast is one of the best parts of a Costa Rica nature trip. If you must choose, pick the cloud forest for birding and atmosphere, and lowland rainforest if seeing monkeys and sloths is the priority.

How to combine them

La Fortuna and Monteverde are the most common pairing. They are connected by road and by the jeep-boat-jeep transfer across Lake Arenal. Sarapiquí and a highland stop near San José are another pairing with shorter drives.
